Choosing a Snow Plow for Your ATV / UTV

Turning your all terrain vehicle (ATV or UTV) into a versatile winter snow removal tool can be easier than you think. ATV snow plows and UTV snow plow blades are available in a few different styles from a couple select brands. Choosing the best model for your money is simply a matter of type, mounting and functionality preference.

Types

Front mounting snow plows for ATVs and UTVs basically come in two types:
Adjustable Tapered or Straight Blade Plows - These ATV / UTV front end mount snow plows feature the choice between the standard straight blade and the tapered cyclone plow blade. An example of this plow is the Warn ProVantage ATV Snow Plow.Simple Straight Blade Plows - The smaller versions of this type of plow are normally more light weight and allow you to raise the blade when not in use. The UTV version of this plow can have blades larger than 62". An example is Swisher's 62" UTV Plow.

Features

Front mounting ATV and UTV snow plows offer many of the same features.
Blade Control - most blades allow you to pivot or rotate your blade by moving pins, wires or pushing a button. This allows you to change the angle and direction in which you push the snow.Durability - because of the elements they are forced to endure, ATV snow blades are made form anodized steel or thick aluminum like the SnowSport ATV Snow Plow. Some even add extra finishes to help keep debris like snow and dirt from sticking to the blade.Front Mount Connection - the snow plow is added and removed by attaching to a front receiver mount.Different Widths - different brands like SnowSport, Warn, Curtis, Swisher and BearForce all offer a wide variety of lengths and widths to choose from.

Mounting

Mounting takes place under the front of the vehicle. A simple attachment is made to a front receiver mount. This mount is sometimes purchased separate from the ATV or UTV snow plow itself. When your plow is not in use, you can remove it and use your vehicle for other purposes.

ATVs and UTVs either come with a factory receiver or you have to purchase a front receiver separately. Some ATV/UTV plows are designed to work with a universal factory receiver and others have their own unique front mount specifically for that particular plow.

Fun and Safe Trail Rides on Your ATV

When planning a trail ride on your ATV, these are some of the important things to do for a fun and safe ride.

1. PREPARATION: I know a guy who ran out of gas when he was far from any station, and he didn't realize that he had a reserve tank for just this sort of emergency. He could have saved himself a lot of grief if he had just read the manual that came with his ATV. Be sure to learn about your vehicle by reading the manual.

2. APPAREL: The helmet is the most important part of your dress. It should be a DOT approved helmet in good condition. A damaged helmet offers little or no protection, and bicycle helmets are not adequate. The second 'must' is snug fitting goggles to protect the eyes from flying debris which could cause serious and permanent eye impairment. If you can't see, you can't drive safely. Long sleeves and long pants is the order of the day to protect you from insects and scratches. Footwear should be boots above the ankle, and gloves with knuckle padding is a good idea.

3. TRAILS: Don't drive on paved roads. ATVS are off-road vehicles and can't compete with automobiles going 50 or 60 MPH. Use trails specifically designed for off-road vehicles. You may check online by Googling 'trail rides,' or phone toll free 1 800 887-2887 for information about finding trail rides in your area.

4. PASSENGERS: Never carry passengers on an ATV made for just one person. Two people ATVS are available. An extra passenger falling off the ATV is a very real possibility and very dangerous.

5. DRUGS: Any kind of drug, including alcohol, can influence your judgment and reaction time. You must be alert to trail dangers at all times. Logs, rocks, and even animals on the trail will call for quick evasive action.

There is a lot to learn about ATV trail riding, but following these five simple rules can help you to have a safe and fun filled riding experience.

Introduction to ATV Tire Chain Use and What Type To Choose

ATV tire chains are useful when your vehicle needs an increase in grip. If you're going to be using an ATV in an area that has snow or ice tire chains are compulsory for safety reasons, but those aren't the only conditions that warrant the use of tire chains. Some people want to be able to traverse areas that don't provide good traction but don't want to go out and purchase specialty tires for only one type of road.

When looking to purchase tire chains for your vehicle you are often confronted with a variety of choices. Those choices can seem like a burden if you don't know what to look for, but don't fret... it's not as complicated as it seems.

When it comes to ATV tire chains, you want to get a quality chain. Having a chain break during motion could bve a recipe for disaster. That's why you should choose a well made and reinforced heavy duty chain.

There are two main types of linking when it comes to tire chains; two link and four link spacing. Four link spacing chains have a longer distance between rungs, while two link spacing has double the amount of chain going across the tire.

You want to go with two link. Four link chains are often quite bumpy and are harder to control. Since two links have more coverage, double in fact, they give a much smoother ride and allow for much more control over your vehicle.

Remember to always read your owners manual. There should be a section that explains tire chains, or at least a section to verify if you have enough clearance. If you're unsure, simply contact the manufacturer, a repair shop, or dealer in your area.

If you're riding on ice or snow, you don't have a choice to use chains. If you're riding in slippery areas such as mud you might want to consider a set of atv mud tires [http://fourwheelertires.org/four-wheeler-mud-tires.html] for your riding. These special four wheeler tires [http://fourwheelertires.org] are excellent for off roading in wet and muddy climates because of the special treat that keeps you from slipping without chains.

ATV Ramps For Packing And Traveling With Your ATV

ATV ramps are helpful when you are trying to load items onto an ATV or pack for a trek. The ramps vary in size and height and you will want to look around to find the best one for your ATV needs. There are many websites, stores, and catalogs devoted to selling these ramps. Make sure to take some time to research the different sites, shops, and catalogs in order to get the best price, best quality, and the best one for your needs. Ramps vary in price but are typically inexpensive, such as usually under one hundred dollars. There are also various styles of ramps so research before settling on one kind.

A lot of the ATV ramps can be folded up. Some can be folded up twice and some will be folded up three times. The amount of folding will probably depend on how much space you have for the ramp and where you will be storing it. There are also some models that do not fold at all. Keep in mind that you will need more space to store one that does not fold. The more folds it has the less space it will take up where you are storing it.

The ones that fold two times range in price from around seventy to eighty dollars. These are good for people that have enough space to store a ramp that will only fold down the middle. The ramps that fold three times are about eighty dollars and will fit in a lot of spaces as once they are folded they will take up very little space. The ones that do not fold are by far the cheapest but keep in mind you will need to make sure you will have enough space to store the ramp. The price for the ones that do not fold is around fifty dollars.

When you need a ramp for your ATV head to the internet, an ATV store, or a catalog that sells ATV accessories and shop around. This will guarantee that you will get the cheapest price and the best product for your money. If you get a good deal on a ramp you will be spending under one hundred dollars. ATV Whips - Why Do You Need Them

ATV whips aren't cool unless they're safe. Safety should always be the first concern when you want to think about putting a whip on your quad, for visibility if you are stalled or hurt and need to be found. While they are typically only required to be on your ATV when you're on public property - especially on the dunes of California, Utah, Oregon or Washington - it's not a bad idea to always have them on your own bike and encourage others around you to use them too.

Observing the Rules

When you hear in advance that an ATV whip and flag is required at a location where you want to ride, you'll need to get the specifics. Is there a rule on the height of the whip? What about the flag - can it be your own personalized favorite or does it need to the safety orange flag? You don't want to be caught unaware without the right size or type, so do your research. If you like to travel to different sites often and don't to have to look it up each time, make sure you keep a few options (whip lengths and flags) in your truck or car or even your quad trailer. The dunes and open spaces are where ATV whips are most frequently required, but not as often on trails.

ATV Safety Watchdog Organizations

A couple of national organizations that support safe ATV use have appeared in the last 25 years to ensure maximum safety for users of ATVs. One is the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) and another is Tread Lightly, based in Utah. ASI's primary goal is to promote the safe and responsible use of ATVs, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation by the rider. Their golden rules are basic, including use of a helmet and outer wear, staying on designated trails yet off of paved roads except when crossing, not carrying a passenger on a one-rider ATV, riding the correct ATV for your size and age and not indulging in drugs or alcohol when riding. ASI also offers a safety course that is offered across the country that consists of the basics of ATV safety - hills, turns, emergency turns and swerving and riding over obstacles. It is strongly recommended that new ATV riders take the course. Having ATV whips on yours and your family's quads is one more step in the direction of safety.

The other non-profit organization, Tread Lightly, is directed at all types of outdoor enthusiasts, not just ATV riders, but specifically addresses this population. They encourage planning ahead and being prepared as ASI does.

You can get ATV whips in all kinds of places, including the dealer where you bought it, hardware stores and online. Flagstaff Warning Whips are one brand that comes in multiple colors for both the whip and the flag, and also has a great selection of lighting for the top of it. Flashing and non-flashing, super bright and "worm" lights are available, also in several different colors. ATV whips are made for safety and you can help ensure it.

2012 ATV Performance Will Leap Off the Drawing Boards With New Materials Slated in Design

Every year, I am blown away by the new high-performance ATVs that are available. They are nothing like the old ones. Some of these racing quads, and three wheelers are absolutely incredible in performance. They are lightweight, faster than heck, and they look cool. If you have a competitive personality, you need to get one of these new ATVs. Not long ago, our think tank was discussing all the incredible innovations in racing that is going into these high-performance toys.

Then we got to thinking about all the new materials on the horizon. I am speaking about carbon manotubes, carbon composites, exotic metallurgy, LED lights, high-tech GPS devices, lightweight helmets, frictionless wheels, and graphene coatings. As more and more of these material science innovations come to market, we will start seeing them in recreational toys, and in sports. I imagine in the future that the shoulder pads worn in football will weigh next to nothing, and the golf clubs will practically swing themselves.

Still, there is a lot to look forward to in the 2012 ATV models which will be coming out by all the top manufacturers. In fact, I'm rather blown away by all the exotic equipment that the factory riders are testing right now. Some of this stuff is beyond belief, and we are talking high-tech materials that are usually only found in spacecraft and fighter jets. To watch these riders at the X-games makes you wonder if these ATVs may someday actually fly?

Yes, these 2012 ATVs may not be cheap, but the ones that are at the top of the line will be engineering marvels filled with incredible new materials. In fact, they will be so fast, and such high-performance, that I bet they will just leap off the drawing boards and the CADCAM design computers before they ever hit the trail or even the showroom floors. Please consider all this.
