Can You Legally Ride a Quad Bike on UK Roads?

Fairly recently, teenage males have made Quad Bikes very popular, as they offer another method of transportation to the usual mopeds or scooters. These fun machines have been designed to be very rugged and in many cases, extremely powerful and have become a very fashionable item to some people. Despite quads being meant for off-road riding only, it is not unusual to see one on the road.

However, if they are allowed on the road, is Quad bike insurance required? What about other legal documents would be required, similar to what a moped or scooter requires?

Quads are usually meant to be used exclusively on private land or at licensed events such as rallies or races. However, to use one legally on the road, it still requires the same basic features as a moped or scooter, which are headlights, indicators, brake lights, mirrors, speedometer and a number plate. The rider must be no younger than 17 and must wear a helmet at all times when riding a Quad. This shouldn't be a problem these days, as a lot of models are sold with these items already installed. If not, these items can be professionally installed and then passed by inspection by the MOT.

In terms of legal documents, Quads require the same documentation as any other road vehicle. This entails being registered with the DVLA, having a valid MOT certificate, full motorcycle driving licence, road tax and insurance. If you look for Quad bike insurance through a generic provider, you may find it a bit challenging. This is because a lot of companies see them as too small a niche and don't want to provide a proper quote. Instead, a specialist insurer would be more likely to have all the information to provide a proper quote for your Quad bike insurance.

To sum up, so long as the appropriate laws as followed and the appropriate Quad bike insurance is obtained, anyone can enjoy Quads on UK roads As with all things, a person can have many years of happy riding if safety is adhered to.
